Sports and Recreation Leader

  BGC East Scarborough is seeking an individual with a strong desire to be a positive example and role model to children aged 6 to 18. The Sports and Recreation Leader must be someone who can work well with minimum supervision, dependable and adaptable, strong instructional skills and knowledge of sports. The goal of the Sports and Recreation Leader is to create a fun atmosphere for the children and provide parents with a sense of confidence that their children are safe, active and happy while building upon endless active life opportunities. Staff will be required to attend a week of training prior to the start of the start of their employment. Staff will be required to attend a week of training prior to the start of their employment.

RESPONSIBILITIES 

• Monitor and lead both indoor and outdoor recreational and sporting activities 

• Training participants in various sport drills, exercise programs and games 

• Develop creative methods to coach participants with various skill level and learning needs 

• Set up mini tournaments or games for participants to use their skills 

• Provide opportunities for participants to be challenged physically, cognitively, and emotionally in a safe, positive supporting environment 

• Engage program participants and use resources within the agency to assist with the needs of the participants 

• Consistently collaborate with team members by sharing ideas and differences openly 

• Other duties as assigned

QUALIFICATIONS 

Key Qualifications and Assets 

• Individuals who are enthusiastic and energetic 

• Previous sports experience (coaching or athlete participation) 

• Genuine interest in working with children and youth between the age of 6 to 18 years 

• Demonstrate ability to resolve conflicts

 • Ability to communicate effectively with parents/guardians and community partners

 • Ability to provide support and instructions to others 

• Demonstrate time management skills 

• Demonstrate an understanding of anti-bias philosophy 

• Legally eligible to work in Canada 

• Currently enrolled in post-secondary education related to youth services is an asset

 • Second language an asset

Skill Development Opportunities

• First Aid Certification and HIGH FIVE Certification (Principles of Healthy Child Development)

 • Development of program planning skills 

• Opportunities to practice positive role modeling and supervision of volunteers/junior leaders, with support from full time staff 

• Develop “soft skills” (punctuality, appropriate dress, communication skills etc)

• Opportunity to develop skills required when working in a team environment 

• Opportunity to develop customer service skills (greeting parents)

 • Overall goal of increasing the student’s employability skills for the future
